KCW hosts second annual Safety Day for their entire staff.
June is National Safety Month.
Our annual Safety Day is an event to strengthen our commitment to safety and emphasize the best practices to stay safe at work.
We held this year’s event on Friday, April 12, to round out National Work Zone Awareness Week. From our field crews in the streets of Baltimore and Washington D.C. to our office workers in Glen Burnie, Maryland, keeping our team safe is our top priority.
This year, employees submitted their ideas for a theme, selecting #SafetyisaStateofMind, which emphasizes the conscious decisions we make every day to work safe and work smart. Our six safety stations consisted of Manhole and Survey crew demonstrations, Ergonomics, Driver Training, First Aid and Safety Jeopardy/Photo Booth. The stations are detailed below.
Manhole and Survey Demonstrations
This is an opportunity for our Manhole and Survey field crews to showcase the work that they do daily, discuss the risks they face, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they wear, and safety procedures that they follow so that our staff can better understand the importance of their work. This was followed by a Job Brief Form exercise to familiarize our team with required safety forms used daily.
Ergonomics
Personal Trainer Kristin showed practical stretches for field crew warmups, and for office employees to combat common ailments such as lower-back problems, neck & wrist problems. With her background in science medicine, Kristin answered our staff’s questions on how to stay healthy & keep our bodies in motion.
Driver Training
We selected a local driving instructor to speak to our staff about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving.
First Aid
We included a first aid professional to teach hands-on, life-saving skills including CPR, the Heimlich, and procedures for bleeding control, in addition to bringing CPR mannequins and first aid tools for our staff to practice with.
Safety Jeopardy & Photo Booth
Safety Jeopardy was filled with key questions about proper safety procedures, protective equipment and hazards to be aware of. The photo booth allowed our team to put on PPE & showcase their safety spirit!
Safety Day not only allows our team to collaborate with each other, but offers a unique opportunity to hear from health and safety professionals about the importance of these issues. Our team understands the importance of safety, but giving them the opportunity to practice, ask questions and continually learn more, strengthens our team’s dedication to working safe, watching out for each other, and keeping safety at the forefront of their minds.
