KCW Embarks on New Era of Growth and Leadership

KCW Engineering Technologies

Kim Groves, President and CEO of KCW Engineering, and Melissa Walker, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

KCW Engineering Technologies is an engineering firm that offers land surveying, civil engineering, land planning, electrical engineering, and telecommunications engineering. We’ve been providing these services for 35 years and remain the only firm in the area that provides civil, land surveying, electrical, and telecom engineering. Even so, this year signals even more exciting shifts forward.

Our executive leadership had major changes this year. Professional engineer and 21-year KCW veteran employee Kim Groves, V.P. and Owner of KCW since 2009 took the helm as CEO. Groves’ vision for company growth rests with flexing KCW’s expert engineering skills and meticulous customer service. Groves is licensed as a professional engineer in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

“Our focus is always to give small company attention with big company expertise,” explained Groves, CEO of KCW. “We’re always going to provide customized engineering solutions for each location. Our difference is that our delivery is customized for every individual client’s expectations, preference and needs. Our long-standing relationships and deep engagements with those clients allows us to deliver an exceptional level of client service, individual to each person within a company.”

Groves continued, “We work in many disciplines – including dry utility design and coordination and land development and planning. When some of our clients who’ve only worked with us in one or two of those disciplines learn this, they kick themselves for not hiring us sooner in those other aspects.”

Another change in the company: 19-year KCW veteran employee Melissa Walker–CFO, VP, and Owner since 2009–transitioned officially into the role of EVP. Walker has led the KCW accounting department since 2006. Her strong financial background, business development acumen, and long tenure play a large role in the continued success and growth of the company.

Business is Booming

New growth at KCW can be seen in four areas:

  1. Land development department. We’re working to revitalize Baltimore with many clients– including Kettler on its large Greektown development of 13.5 acres with 311 garage townhouses and Telesis Corporation on its Barclay Old Goucher redevelopment of 20-city blocks of mixed-income, rental and homeownership community with retail and high-quality green space.
  2. Highway relocation work. Our relationships and work with Verizon, Pepco, the Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA), and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) led to our being sought out to work on the Purple line. This work is key to the greater Maryland/DC region, as it helps provide people with faster, safer, more efficient travel, support community revitalization and transit-oriented development, and connect people to jobs.
  3. Signature multi-discipline projects. We’re helping reduce the impact of power outages on DC residents by working on the DC Power Line Undergrounding or PLUG. This project taps every discipline of our company: surveying, civil engineering, and electric engineering. We are honored to be part of the integrated team improving overall reliability and resiliency of the electric power supply for all District of Columbia PEPCO customers.
  4. Company expansion overall. We recently expanded our office space by fifty percent. We are also actively hiring. We expect to expand our team by 20 percent in the next 12-18 months. Check out kcw-et.com/careers to apply, or pass along the link.

Bringing Life to the Baltimore Area

When we partner with a client to renew a location, a site, or a space, we respect that we’re part of the team helping that community with a new sense of itself.

Melissa Walker, Chief Financial Officer of KCW, said, “We were just in Baltimore meeting one of our long time clients, the Archdiocese, and it’s always wonderful to see the projects on the horizon there. We have worked on many churches, revitalization projects, urban redevelopment, and much more. We love being a part of bringing opportunities and life to the city.”

Our Values Drive Client Service

Our mantra is: Make everyone’s day easier. Whether that’s for a client, a partner, or a KCW team member. The point is, we’re all working toward the same goal, and sometimes lines are blurry. We all pitch in to help. Tell us what you need, and we’ll have all hands on-deck.

Open Communication is what makes us tick. Our relationships with clients and employees are based on active listening and empowering people to say what they need. Ever heard “build it and they will come?” Well…here’s something of the same ilk. Say it, and we will deliver.

This underlines our other mantra: Be a Problem Solver. Once we know where the challenges are, let us go to work for you. We know how to motivate and find paths and options to find the right solution for the challenges that are bound to arise.
